Chapter 651 Retracing the Steps - II
After what felt like an eternity to Damien, it was finally night.
Damien put on his best trousers and vest. He didn't know why he was doing that if he wasn't going to show his face to Ariel. But he groomed himself anyway.
Finally, like always, he made sure that he had his explosives on him.
The explosives were obviously blood. He had a habit of gathering blood from the willing demons, mostly his servants and maids. He would store the blood samples in a small ball-like container. And he would string them all together and hang them around his waist as if they were some kind of jewelry.
Maple was the one who had suggested the idea of storing blood to him. She had seen him cutting his palm every time he would use his blood magic.
But cutting his palm every time he wanted to use the blood magic was impractical. Also, throwing the blood at the enemies and hoping it would land on their bodies was equally impractical.
To make the blood magic a little more feasible and painless for Damien, Maple crafted the containers. She also put spells on those containers. The spell would keep the blood fresh. And the container would repair itself and return back to Damien once it was thrown and done its job.
After years of using them, they had become a part of Damien's identity, just like his inhibitors.
Damien made sure to hide him well, and finally, he imagined Ariel's image in his head.
When he opened his eyes, he found himself in open land. He noticed the five Royals walking together in front of him.
His heart warmed up when he saw them. "Ramon! Niylah… and Zach… Oh my goodness! Zach must be almost as tall as me. He looks so grown up! Everyone looks so great!"
Damien fisted over his mouth and smiled like a fool. Read latest stories on empire
"But where's Joyce?" He suddenly recalled, "Oh, right! She's already married. Ah! I can't wait to see her as well.
And then again, that hybrid stole his happiness.
Kenneth was like an eclipse in Damien's life.
The three of the Royals walked ahead leaving Kenneth and Ariel behind them.
"Stay calm and cool, Damien. Calm and cool." He was lightly patting his chest and was trying to calm his heart. "You're here to make sure that hybrid is a monster in disguise… I mean… you are here to make sure that he is a perfect man for Ariel. Calm down, now."
Damien took a deep breath in and tried his best to keep his cool. However, he could see Ariel and Kenneth's conversation heading in the direction that he wished he didn't have to see again.
He felt as if his heart was pierced by a sword countless times when he saw that hybrid leaning in for a kiss.
"That bastard! They aren't even married! And he is trying to do something so despicable to my Riri!" Damien lost his mind at once when Kenneth touched Ariel's neck and jaw.
"I'm going to kill him!" he screamed in his mind.
In the heat of the moment, he snatched a ball of blood from his waist and aimed it at Kenneth's head.
However, he screamed at his pathetic self, "What the hell are you doing, Damien! You're going to repeat the same mistake as 9 years ago? Can't you see! Ariel looks happy with him, dammit!"
It took every cell in Damien's body to stop himself from killing that hybrid. And instead of throwing the explosive at that hybrid, Damien swooshed that ball behind him without caring where it landed.
Thankfully, the ball dropped inside a cooking pot, and no one was seriously injured.
Damien felt greatly relieved when his explosive distracted those two from eating each other's mouths off.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
He ran a little further away and sat down on a stone that he found on a field.
He was utterly confused about his own feelings. At one moment, he would think of crying and begging for Ariel's forgiveness. He would think of rekindling their friendship again, professing his love for her, getting married, and spending eternity together.
The next moment, he would think that it would probably be best for Ariel if he stayed away from her life for good. He would think that without his interference, Ariel would be happy with that man.
But the moment he would see those two together, he would die inside. He didn't want Ariel to be happy with some other man. He wanted to be the one to make her happy.
He looked up at the night sky and mumbled, "If only I could go back in time…"
He heaved a deep sigh and thought, "But sadly, I can't. I have to make a choice here in the present. Either I have to give up on Ariel or I have to win her back."
"What will it be?"
After thinking for some time, Damien thought of sticking with the group throughout the journey. "I will decide after observing them for some more time."
Damien then went back to find Ariel. He saw her gathering around with the others and eating. He sat while maintaining a safe distance. He was happy to be able to hear their talks even though he wasn't actively involved.
After a while, he got to witness them singing and dancing. "Oh my goodness! Look at her and Zach! They are great at dancing," he thought to himself as he smiled, and rested his chin on his palm.
He was barely holding himself from popping inside the circle and dancing along with Ariel.
Damien also had his eyes on Kenneth. From what he had observed until now, he could tell that Kenneth had a charismatic personality. He could blend well with everyone and make everyone follow him with no problem.
Damien narrowed his eyes at Kenneth from afar and thought, "Either he is an excellent actor, or he is simply a charismatic person. Either way, he can easily charm people."
Damien felt a pinch in his heart again when that hybrid tried to make a move on Ariel.
But for some reason, Ariel denied him this time. "She isn't…" His eyes twinkled when he thought, "She isn't that comfortable with him yet! Is this a good sign for me?"
But then he scolded himself, "No, don't get too excited. Even if she doesn't like him, it doesn't mean she will automatically like you. I bet she will kick your arse the moment she finds you."
He stayed awake for the whole night, keeping an eye on the boys' tent. He wanted to see if that hybrid would sneak off at night and would go somewhere.
In the morning, Damien regretted not getting a wink of sleep because there was no suspicious movement from Kenneth.
When everyone was ready to set off on their journey again, Damien sneaked inside one of the empty carriages that was lined up right behind Ariel's carriage.
For about an hour or so, Damien was sticking his ear to the wall of the carriage, trying to eavesdrop on the conversation going on in the other carriage.
However, he was so tired from sitting wide awake in the cooler weather than what he was used to for the whole night that he fell asleep.
Keeping up the invisibility spell as well as the aura diminishing spell continuously for a long time had also taken a toll on his energy.
And because of that, he slept as if he was unconscious for the whole journey. He woke up only when the carriages came to a halt at the guest house in The Paradise Edge.
