Chapter 1018: Disappointment and dissatisfaction
[Eon’s POV: ]
The first day of the tests has ended… and we’ve once again gathered in the garden before the academy castle.
"…"
No one is saying anything.
Everyone is simply sitting down, with their head resting between their closed fists.
Including me and Rein, everyone was in deep thoughts.
[{ "How was it for you?" }]
[{ "Not as good as you might think." }]
Even for me, the test itself wasn’t that good.
’Finding the meaning of fiction took much longer than I had thought, so I couldn’t answer more than half of my questions. I don’t even know what questions were asked after one point.’
The test wasn’t anything I wanted to speak about either. Telling Rein I killed an innocent rabbit which hurt her as well as the others anyway.
It’s better to just stay silent about it, if anything we should think about the next test that we will have tomorrow.
[{ "I couldn’t answer more than half of the questions." }]
It wasn’t a good thing. Even if we were council members, I don’t know how they would judge my test scores and how well I even did. Read exclusive adventures at empire
I myself wasn’t happy with my performance. The only good thing here was how I was able to expand my understanding about something I hadn’t thought much about before, and to unlock a useful ability, but that wasn’t related to the test.
If we talk about the exam itself, I did much worse than I could have had it been any simpler exam.
[{ "Looks like they gave their all if you’re saying that, huh?" }]
Rein wasn’t particularly surprised or shocked that I didn’t answer many of my questions since she could tell from my expression that there was a bigger reason behind it.
She could also tell that the thing I was thinking so intently about was related to my test scores and not the other thing which I was not worrying about.
This, as she understood, meant that the test aside, I had done well in whatever I did out there. And, what I was worried about, was the test itself which, ultimately, did not really matter.
’She understood how I was conflicted about having done something amazing and not having been able to answer a few simple questions or something.’
She kissed my hand to calm down my anxiety a little, and it certainly was effective as well.
[{ "What happened with yours though? Why do you look so… distant?" }]
[{ "Well…" }]
From how everyone was sitting how everyone wasn’t speaking with one another, we can all derive a few things like how Tia couldn’t do as well as she had hoped for, how Quin had done well and was thinking about something completely unrelated to the test, or how captain Alpha was not saying anything to comfort Luna who, in fact, was the one that couldn’t do as well as she wanted.
From everyone’s expressions, body language, as well as how they were sighing, we could tell how disappointed or dissatisfied they were with their own performance.
And there were also some who were upset because someone they had spent a lot of time on could not do as well as they might have wanted from them.
Broadly speaking, there were all kinds of emotions floating around among us. Each one of us was silent for different reasons.
[{ "The test was a little too easy… it’s strange." }]
I wasn’t speaking since I missed many questions and the nature of my questions while on the other hand, Rein was silent because she had done significantly better than she had expected. Nôv(el)B\\jnn
[{ "Most of it was simple questions, many weren’t even trick questions when I thought about it. I thought they gave me the wrong paper, but then again, many of the things in it were too specific so I don’t think it was someone else’s.
But, if it really was mine, why were the questions so… straightforward?" }]
She had a Understanding Mana paper and she finished it without any great difficulty. As she told me, many of the questions were practical but they weren’t as difficult as they should have been.
She even told me how she ended up suggesting a few improvements for those questions.
’It was something I usually do, but she did it this time and there isn’t really anything wrong with it.’
If we think about it, these tests were mainly aimed at testing the improvements that one has had ever since joining the academy.
In Rein’s case, she was simply a (tier-4) mage [Rank-3] knight when we came here. She did not know much about her powers, she did not have the eye abilities that she did right now, she also did not have as much experience as she did right now.
’She had improved as much as me or perhaps even more.’
She was significantly better, stronger, and skilful than she was when she came here, and much of it was thanks to Lady Sapphire, her mentor.
She had not only taught them about the Witches, she even taught her how there were many things that she did not know about her own witch powers.
Additionally, she taught her about her unique origin powers that, much like her witchcraft, were pretty unique.
Not many people had the ability to cut down anything there was along with the ability to travel long distances through shadows, masterfully control darkness on a level that she could, or even use her powers as flexibly as she did.
[{ "It wasn’t that the questions were easy, dummy. You’ve improved just that much. They simply underestimated your growth." }]
There was nothing wrong with her finding the questions easy since it could be called a miste from the Teacher’s part.
They did not know all about her and even the headmaster might have overlooked how deep her ability to See truth was.
Her eyes weren’t yet on the level of his eyes, but she was still much stronger than before. Her ability to control, perceive, and use Mana was on another level as well thanks to the training she has had with her mentor.
She was significantly stronger physically as well, so it ultimately improved her overall quality of control over her various powers.
[{ "Just think of it like you have surpassed Their expectations. It’s amazing." }]
I gave her hand a little kiss as well and, I could tell she liked it from the blush that bloomed on her.
[{ "You… you think so?" }]
It was rare to see her shy like that, the others were actually surprised to see this and forgot about their own blunders for a moment.
Captain Alpha was also going to comment something, but Luna blocked his mouth with her hand, knowing well how he would get beaten up if he said anything at that moment.
[{ "of course, silly. You’ve worked hard. It’s obviously a good thing that you found the questions easier. They will simply have to do a better job next time… but I know they will fail next time as well, haha." }]
The pace she was growing at was nothing less impressive than my own.
Though people didn’t see it like I do, she had improved a lot in many ways. It wasn’t that unbelievable that even the headmaster couldn’t perfectly gauge her current level and the point she was at when she came here.
’She can even do astral projection for a few seconds by herself now. And it hasn’t even been a few years since she started practising it.’
It was impressive.
I kind of felt proud of her as well, but I know if I tell her that, she will either walk away from here after slapping me, or will break out in a deeper blush.
"Can you two use telepathy or something? How is it that you ’talk’ without saying anything?" Tia couldn’t help herself anymore.
The rest of them were seeing how we were ’talking’ as well, and they had seen us do this many times before as well.
Some had already assumed that we had some way to speak with one another without saying anything. But since it was a personal thing and not many knew about Celes, they didn’t ask about it.
Still, Tia couldn’t help herself at this moment.
"Well, you can say that we do have something like that, yes. Do you want to try it as well? I won’t tell you how it works though."
"Hmm? Really?"
"Of course~."
Everyone was feeling a little down anyway. Showing them something like this will cheer them up a little, so I didn’t mind it.
"Oh, wait. You’re showing it to her? I’ve asked so many times and you always say no."
Captain Alpha was a different story.
Luna knew about Celes and her abilities but he did not. At least, he didn’t know everything that Celes knew at the very least.
"Well… it’s a different story right now so, I can show you as well."
"Hey! That’s now fair!"
Since Quin knew about this connection that we have already, only a few others besides Tia and Captain Alpha did not know about it.
Zoe, Carla, Chry, Alf, even Quin knew about it, but now that we have this chance.
"Well…"
It wasn’t a bad idea to how them how they can, with my permission, connect with this big network that we have assembled with Celes and her clones.
[{ "You might have seen it before, mostly when communicating with your familiars perhaps. It’s simply same as talking in your head." }]
Since Celes used Solnova to access the individual’s (Thought voice) and transmits it between her various clones who are also connected to the nurse network of someone else, it’s pretty much a very secure and advanced form of telepathy.
But since it’s an ability of my familiar, calling it telepathy isn’t right actually.
[{ "Hmm? Woah! How did you do that!" }]
[{ "Hmm? Wait! Tia! How did you do that!" }]
[{ "Hmm?! How did I hear Liz?!" }]
[{ "Hehe, calm down everyone~. I think Lucifer is doing this~." }]
We don’t have a particular name for it but we all call it Celes’ network. And for us who know what powers she has, this name is quite fitting, right?
