Chapter 1179 Moving Deeper into the Forest

With Laura's power washing over them, feeling their soreness and immense tiredness easing, the group could relax slightly, no longer alert at the slightest sound they heard in the surroundings. They could now defend themselves if the situation called for it, but even after Laura had done what she had done, their exhaustion was still present, and it weighed heavily on them.

They gathered in a loose circle, their backs turned to one another so that they could survey the surroundings while resting. The day was akin to night in the forest, and the forest itself was incredibly quiet as if shocked by the sudden battle that had taken place in it.

"Alright, we've dealt with the hunters and shadow wolves, which definitely were amongst the most powerful opponents we can face here, at least we have done that much so far." Reign stated, his breath returning to normal, no longer heavy.

Wolf, on the other hand, let out a shaky breath while his gaze steeled. "There are definitely more enemies lurking here, if we decide to move deeper in, that will mean we're pushing our luck, we need to be smart and careful about this, we can't afford to be caught by surprise."

Beast, his bow lowered, looked around the battlefield littered with remnants of dark energy and fallen creatures, hunters and wolves that had died before they had transformed, his face grim. "Agreed. If something else strong shows up, we're in no shape to fight back."

Aelrinder, still glowing faintly with the starlight energy he had summoned, nodded in agreement. "The riders and hybrids were formidable enough. And if there are truly multiple tribes of more powerful creatures dwelling here, we could very well be dealing with an enemy far stronger than we anticipated."

They all shared a heavy silence, the realization settling in that their journey was only just beginning. The system had created this forest as the final test for the trial, they could wait at the ranch and face it, or move in to destroy whatever was inside, but the danger was truly above what they had expected. The rider had given them a glimpse of what waited here and how dangerous the opponents would be, but they all sensed that the true threat had yet to reveal itself.

"So," Reign began, glancing at each of them in turn, "we have two options: push forward and face whatever's waiting for us, or we head back to the ranch to regroup and come back stronger."

Tank's gaze hardened, his exhaustion temporarily forgotten as he clenched his shield. "We should press on. If we stop now, who knows what might change in the forest, after all, how can we be sure that the system won't change anything? We've made it this far and done too much damage to let it go to waste."

Beast nodded, his expression grim. "The forest has tasted our strength today. If we return to the ranch, the creatures here might expect us and will know of our strength. Every creature will be waiting for us, prepared. But if we push now, while they're disoriented…"

Shadow raised an eyebrow, his usual smirk softened by a hint of worry. "So what, we just walk straight into the jaws of whatever the forest has hidden? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm all for action, but this is risky, even for us."

"Shadow's right," Reign said, nodding. "This place has already shown us that it can adapt to our moves. We're running on fumes. If we press on, it'll be because we're certain it's the only way to end this now."

Aelrinder's starlight faded completely, leaving him looking pale but resolute. "If we go, we go together, and we go with full conviction, no hesitation."

The group exchanged a silent look of unity, each knowing the risks but committed to the path forward. Reign's gaze drifted around their faces, reading the exhaustion mingled with determination. Despite the weight of fatigue, a fire burned in their eyes—a shared understanding that whatever lay ahead, they would face it together.

"Then it's settled," Reign said, gripping his sword tightly. "We press on, but with caution. Let's conserve as much energy as possible and stay alert."

"Beast, Aelrinder, be careful, even though you have recovered, using a mark and the power of the stars does take a large toll on the body, don't overextend yourselves, I know you still have more than enough power, the fusion, more charges of the star power, but still, take a bit easier this time."

Beast and Aelrinder nodded, neither of them complaining as Reign's words were indeed true, compared to the others, they were a bit more tired because of the powers they used.

The group formed a tight formation, moving deeper into the forest's shadowed depths. They kept to the more open areas, avoiding dense clusters of trees where ambushes were more likely. The forest itself felt alive, almost sentient, as if it were watching them, waiting for their next move. They moved with hushed steps, their senses heightened, each snapping twig or distant howl setting their nerves on edge.

After what felt like hours of careful navigation, while in reality it was only about 15 minutes, they reached a small clearing bathed in an eerie, luminescent glow. The clearing was unlike any part of the forest they had seen before. Silver trees stood tall, their bark shimmering under the ghostly light. The air was thick with energy, both beautiful and foreboding.

"Beast, sensing anything?" Reign whispered, prompting Beast to try and use his senses, trying to see if he could sense any beasts nearby, to which he shook his head to.

"Alright, let's survey the surroundings first, this place is definitely not normal." Reign said as Shadow and Wolf moved quietly, scanning the perimeter of the clearing for any hidden threats. They were about to signal the all-clear when a low, resonant hum filled the air, and the ground beneath them began to vibrate.

"Get ready!" Reign ordered, swords drawn, as a massive shadow began to take shape on the far side of the clearing.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

From the darkness emerged a creature, towering and primal, with eyes like molten amber. Its body was a strange fusion of wolf and dragon, covered in obsidian scales that reflected the pale glow of the clearing. Tendrils of shadow drifted around it, swirling like living mist, and each step it took sent tremors through the ground.

"Seriously?" Shadow asked as Reign sighed and got ready to fight with the others.

The creature's emergence from the shadows silenced any further remarks from Shadow. Standing nearly twice as tall as any of them, it loomed like a creature summoned from the depths of nightmare, its amber eyes fixated on the group with a mix of intelligence and primal fury. Each breath it exhaled came out in clouds of swirling darkness, and a faint, almost hypnotic, hum pulsed from its body, filling the air with an unsettling energy.

Reign quickly assessed the situation. The team's resources were strained, and while Laura's healing had restored a portion of their energy, they were nowhere near peak form. But seeing the creature's fusion of raw strength and dark magic, he realized that even if they had all been at full power, this would still be a formidable opponent.

Still, the wolf, for now, was merely observing them.

"We don't have the luxury to hesitate," Reign murmured, glancing at each of his comrades with a steely gaze. "This thing is blocking our only clear path forward. We take it down or we're trapped."

Tank stepped forward, though he was breathing heavily, his shield still raised, and nodded. "Then let's go all in—just like we did with the rider. We need to weaken it first, find some kind of opening."

Wolf, a flicker of his once-fierce flames still visible in his eyes, grinned at the challenge. "Agreed. Let's hit it with everything we've got left."

Beast notched an arrow, his focus intense as he aimed. "Reign, on your command."

Reign tightened his grip on his swords and gave a nod. "Tank, engage up close; Wolf, hit it with fire from the sides. Beast, focus on its legs if you can; we need to slow it down. Shadow, circle around to get behind it. Laura, stay back and heal when you can."

With their plan hastily set, Tank charged first, shield raised to absorb the brunt of the creature's attack. The ground seemed to quake with each step of the monstrous wolf-dragon, and as Tank closed in, it raised a massive claw, covered in a dark mist that glistened with an oily sheen. It slashed downward, claws raking the air, and Tank barely managed to brace himself in time, intercepting the blow with his shield.

The impact jarred him to the core, sending a shockwave through his arms, but he held firm. "Now!" he shouted, teeth gritted.

Wolf and Beast took advantage of the brief opening. Wolf launched a stream of flames that, while weakened, managed to cling to the creature's obsidian scales, forcing it to recoil slightly. Beast released his arrow, aiming for the joint in one of its massive hind legs. The arrow struck, embedding itself deep into the scaled hide, though the creature barely reacted, its hide dense and resistant.
