Chapter 71 - Provocation
Yang Yi followed the bloody footprints, eventually arriving in front of the giant ship, where they disappeared.
There was no broken open cabin or deck ahead, but rather the slanted bottom of the ship's hull.
“Did it climb up...?” Yang Yi speculated.
He took a few steps back, removed his eye patch, and tried to use his Third Eye to get a clearer view of the inside of the ship.
There was a peculiar window — unlike the others, it was not covered with weeds or vines, and it seemed to have been deliberately cleaned...
Just then, Yang Yi noticed a shadow rapidly approaching him out of the corner of his left eye.
It moved very quietly, its steps soundless on the grass. By the time the prey heard the noise, it would already be too late to escape.
But Yang Yi was special — his Third Eye captured the shadow, and thus he quickly turned, aimed, and pulled the trigger of his flintlock pistol.
Click!
The gun misfired.
Yang Yi wasted no time and immediately threw an axe.
It was a throwing weapon he had picked up earlier. Although the quality was low, it was easy to carry and quick to use.
The axe flew with precision, hitting the shadow's knee with a sharp sound.
But the damage was limited — it bounced off its body, deflected by its spiky fur, unable to cut in.
The shadow didn’t even stop for a moment. It ran faster, reaching Yang Yi in no time.
Its appearance was pitiful, with a body covered with scars, lodged arrows, gunshot wounds and lacerations. Its skin was peeling, and there was even a broken spear stuck in its back.
Moreover, its black-grey fur was unmistakable—this was a missing werewolf.
The reason it could still move despite its injuries wasn’t because of its vitality — it had already lost any sign of life.
The wounds were rotting and crawling with maggots, emitting a strong stench of decay.
It…was likely a moving corpse.
【You have encountered an abnormal creature. Your sanity decreases by 5.】
Yang Yi immediately reacted.
After realising the axe was ineffective, he switched to his Sea Serpent’s Fang and the ironwood shield.
With such a fast-moving creature, there was no chance of escaping.
So he braced for a direct confrontation and activated the Sea Serpent’s Fang skill: Flame Jet!
He didn’t use the cannon mode of his flintlock because he wanted to save it for another potential monster.
Calculating the distance, Yang Yi unleashed the skill, sending a fan-shaped jet of flames from his short sword.
The flames were like a Molotov cocktail, igniting everything in a 3-metre wide, 110-degree arc in front of him.
This included the werewolf.
Its spiky fur, while resistant to sharp weapons, couldn’t withstand the high heat. In an instant, it caught fire and turned into a fireball.
However, the creature didn’t seem to feel pain and wasn’t afraid of the fire. It swiped at Yang Yi, and the ironwood shield he hastily raised blocked the strike.
Bang!
Wood splintered, and the ironwood shield could no longer hold up — it shattered completely.
Yang Yi was knocked backwards by the force, crashing into the ship’s hull. His left arm went numb, losing all sensation, and his sleeve was torn, exposing the chainmail underneath.
Had he not been wearing the chainmail, Yang Yi would have been badly injured.
Not far away, the werewolf had already been reduced to a flaming ball.
Though it wasn’t afraid of fire, the flames had caused real damage. Its flesh was charred, releasing a foul burnt smell.
Taking advantage of the moment, Yang Yi swapped back to his flintlock pistol and fired another shot, which accurately hit the werewolf’s knee.
Without the protection of its fur, its knee shattered, causing it to stumble and fall to the ground.
Yang Yi didn’t stop there. He threw the Sea Serpent’s Fang, stabbing it into the werewolf’s left eye, the sword hilt embedding deep inside.
The heat from the sword quickly spread through, damaging the werewolf's brain. Its body stiffened, and it stopped moving altogether.
But Yang Yi didn’t rejoice in his victory. He remained vigilant with his Third Eye, scanning his surroundings, and quickly hid in a nearby bush.
After several tense seconds, with no sign of movement from the ship, he put the eye patch back on.
By then, the werewolf had completely burned. Its body was turning into charcoal and emitted large amounts of thick black smoke.
The earlier Flame Jet had also ignited much of the surrounding vegetation.
Fortunately, as there were no trees around the ship and the ground was damp, the fire didn’t spread.
If not for that, the entire island could have been set ablaze, and Yang Yi himself wouldn’t have been able to escape.
He approached the scorched werewolf and, taking a long-handled axe from his pouch, swung it at its head.
Clang!
The first swing made a metallic sound, and he didn't manage to sever the werewolf's neck.
Its bones must have been seriously hard.
He pulled the axe back and struck three more times, finally chopping off the blackened wolf head.
After putting out the fire with dirt and letting it cool down, Yang Yi retrieved his prized short sword and, upon examining the wolf’s mouth, found a silver bullet lodged between its lower teeth.
"White Rose?"
Upon getting sight of the silver bullet, Yang Yi immediately thought of the white revolver he had seen before, which seemed to shoot silver bullets that were capable of hindering regeneration and breaking curses.
Yang Yi also gained information about the werewolf.
【Name: Grey Werewolf (Undead)】
【Description: A grey werewolf corpse revived through necromancy, with tough black-grey fur. It will attack any living creature except the caster.】
Can be used in the monster gacha machine.
"Undead...Caster."
Yang Yi noticed the key words.
It meant that some kind of creature had used necromancy to bring the grey werewolf's corpse back to life.
Another enemy existed!
Yang Yi stuffed the scorched, still-smoking, ferocious wolf head into his pouch, planning to take it back to the vending machine.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
Since it was already burnt, it didn’t seem worth dissecting, meaning he didn’t plan on telling Suna to avoid her complaining about him not leaving a single whole corpse behind.
As for the werewolf's body...it was nearly reduced to ash.
Yang Yi didn’t rush into the ship, but instead lay in wait, drinking a bottle of holy water to restore his condition.
After the flames diminished, he got up again.
At this point, there was still no sign of movement from the ship.
This suggested that the enemy was probably not on board.
He checked the time, noticing how there were still four hours until nightfall.
With two hours to explore and two hours to return, there was plenty of time left.
His condition was also good; after drinking the holy water, his energy had recovered a bit, and his health was above 85.
Aside from the Sea Serpent’s Fang skill being depleted, none of his other abilities had been used.
After making up his mind, Yang Yi approached the ship and used his spider-web gloves to climb up. (1)
He was looking for a suitable entry point, such as the window that had been deliberately cleaned.
A few minutes later, he reached the window and tossed a long-legged sandfish inside. After confirming there was no movement, he peeked inside.
"Something’s wrong!"
The ship had clearly been through a shipwreck and unluckily drifted there.
The interior should have been chaotic.
Why did the room have neatly arranged tables, chairs, and shelves? Even the positions had been changed because the original floor had become the wall.
However, there was still a thick layer of dust.
What this suggested was that when the ship washed up on the deserted island, there had probably been survivors aboard.
He didn’t rush to jump in but instead observed for a while as the interior was dim, and only with the Third Eye could clearly see things.
He quickly spotted a row of unusual objects — glass jars — which Yang Yi was very familiar with, having seen many like them in Suna’s lab.
Inside, there were five human heads, neither more nor less, carefully placed on a shelf that had clearly been cleaned.
