Chapter 103 The Illusion Of Freedom.

To be fair, she can't be a streamer even if she wants to because she can't afford to publicize the plans for her operations and her other activities.

All she has is her ability to burn things and her love for fighting. That's why she must take every opportunity to publicize how good she is at fighting.

Meanwhile, Kelvin was waiting for nightfall. It was the time he could attend the black market. He also had to leave the city since the location of the illegal market is out in the wilds.

The black market is hated so much that they don't dare to host their market in District 666. They have offended a lot of people with their wanton kidnapping. They even have to constantly change the location of their market every once in a while.

They also tell only a select few of trusted gangs and cabals their location. He was only able to get this location from Pauli. He would need to be a big-time villain for him to get an invitation on his own.

This secrecy is because a lot of people hate them. Snuggling of weapons, murder, theft, and narcotics can be done openly in District 666. But the specific targeting and hunting of every super has a way of offending everyone. It is hated just as the police force hates human farms.

Unlike the human farms, which only target supers with healing abilities, the black market targets everyone they can lay their hands on. Then they rig the captives with explosives and sell them into slavery.

Any hero that wants to get popular quickly just needs to hunt the black market. Many heroes have done it, and some of them have succeeded in raiding the black market many times. But the black market never dies.

The black market can't die because there are more than one of them. Many people start up the slave trade since there is a lot of demand for what they have to sell.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

The demand for slaves could be for sex work, cannibalism, sadism, loyal manpower, and flesh for abilities. The list goes on and on.

He left for one of his safe houses first before he began making his way to the site of the black market.

He didn't take his hoverbike. Instead he got a vehicle to drop him off at the gate of the city, then he took off sprinting towards his destination.

It is not that he likes to run. He just doesn't want his precious Rover 4 to be destroyed after he botches a mission. He has had to destroy three hoverbikes since the first one he destroyed after his fight with Zain. Now he is taking precautions to avoid that possibility.

Besides, he is faster this way. His speed and toughness have made the wilds surrounding the city safe for him. He doesn't think it is because he is all powerful, but more because the strong incursion zombies around the city have been killed. He will need to venture farther away to see more powerful zombies.

Wrath sighed as he sped across the wilds. He was curious so he asked, "What are you thinking about?"

She replied, "Human slavery."

"Ah." He exclaimed. "I see."

Then she asked him, "Do you know that slavery is a fact of life? It has never been truly removed across human history."

He said, "It became illegal for a long time before the advent of the destiny tower. That has to count for something."

Wrath nodded. "It does count. If only for very little. Slavery was still going on. I am not talking about sex trafficking; I am talking about legal slavery. Men and women were paid just the barest minimum to keep them alive with a roof over their heads. They couldn't quit or they would become homeless in a month and starve to death in less time."

"In the past, slavers were the ones that had to pay for food and shelter for their slaves. But once it became illegal to own slaves, the slavers gave their slaves the money they needed to buy those things for them. Sure, the slaves had freedom, but it was only an illusion of it."

"I must admit that the slaves had a bit of dignity, but it was like the difference between bribery and lobbying. One was illegal and the other was not. One could be done in the open while the other couldn't. But it was easy for the illegal one to become legal as long as it was done in the open for everyone to see."

Kelvin shrugged and said, "That's human nature, I guess."

Wrath agreed. "It is human nature. We are species built for war and domination. This is true across many versions of earth. The Yggdrassil civilization is one built on slavery. It grows stronger through conquest. You will see more of what I mean if you ever go to the foreign battlefield."

"If you look around right now, what you will see is the result of peaceful annexation by the Yggdrassil civilization. Of the ten billion human beings alive at that time, less than one billion remained alive by the time Icon became a demigod."

"At that time, there were more than two billion incursion zombies roaming around. We were practically at the edge of extinction after a mere 12 years of the influence of the incursion. Continents cracked, and millions of entire species of plants and animals disappeared forever."

"Remember that this is just a passive influence of the Yggdrassil civilization on our lives and planets. Imagine just how bad things would be if the Yggdrassil civilization had come bearing arms against us instead of offering us a way to make us stronger. We would have cracked like a soft boiled egg."

A/N: Ladies and gentlemen, don't take the stuff in this book as gospel. Just like most gospel, it can be full of bullshit. In other news, have you heard about the contracts that music artists sign with label companies. I hear it can be brutal.
